One Industry, Once Voice
There is strength in numbers. As spokesman for the retail industry, the PRA has been in the forefront of major issues and concerns that impact on the retail sector. Over the years, the PRA has stimulated discussions or official action on many issues, including the garbage fee, shortening of working hours plan, coin shortage, standardization of garment and shoe sizes, sidewalk vending, expanded operation of duty free shops, music copyright issue, contractualization issue, price tag law, liberalization of the retail trade, among others. Thru this representation, issues are brought to the attention of relevant agencies, public and private, for discussion and/or resolution.
Aside from its dynamic composition of key players in the retail industry—retailers, wholesalers, distributors, suppliers, manufacturers, the PRA is also affiliated with other large influential business organizations like the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI); the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP); and is part of the regional retail aggrupation known as the Federation of Asian Retailers Associations (FARA), composed of the recognized national retail association of each member country . These national and international affiliations provide local retailers the unlimited benefits of being connected to the globalized world of business and retailing.
PRA’s role as the “pulse and voice of the retail industry” ensures that the interests of the members of the retail sector are amply represented. This is plainly manifested in a number of important government and private sector councils where PRA’s representation has been requested, e.g the Oversight Committee on Duty Free, the Retailers Council of the Philippines, Philippine Article Numbering Council (PANC), Council to Combat Counterfeiting and Piracy of Patents, Copyrights and Trademarks (COMPACT), among others.
Access to Industry Information
Information is an indispensable tool in business. Access to a rich resource of information from various sources, not otherwise accessible, can help your business gain that competitive edge over your competitors. PRA maintains a growing Library and Databank of reading materials, books, magazines, and references—local and foreign–on retailing and allied industries, which is open to PRA members for free and to the public for a token research fee. The PRA also regularly issues circulars on industry updates (laws, regulations, ordinances, etc) affecting the retail industry, in particular, and business in general.
The PRA publishes a number of specialized publications to cater to the different needs of its members. The quarterly “Philippine Retailing” newsletter is the official publication of PRA. It serves as a conduit of information on the latest news and developments in the industry and the activities of the association. In the year 2002, the PRA came out with two (2) new specialized newsletters: Retail Events, which announces the different events relevant to retailing; and Retail Sources, which is a compilation of offers from different local and foreign suppliers. And because speed is an important aspect of information, and with PRA’s intention to bring to its members the latest news and developments in the industry at the fastest way possible, the PRA is also coming up with PRA E-News, the PRA’s electronic newsletter.
Seminars, Conferences and Programs for Professional Development
The PRA regularly conducts seminars, workshops, and other relevant training programs to upgrade the knowledge, skills and competencies of retailers. On top of this, the PRA organizes the annual National Retailers Conference and Stores Asia Expo (NRCE) — the biggest focused and dedicated retail industry event in the country — where the latest trends and developments in the industry are discussed. This is complemented by Stores Asia, an exhibition of the latest tools for global retailing.
Encouraging the growth of “World Class Retailers”
The PRA believes that the Filipino retailer has all the makings of a world-class retailer at par with the world’s best. The annual “Search for Outstanding Filipino Retailers” and the “Store Designers of the Year” are two major competitions that seek to recognize Filipino retailers who have epitomized the model of a successful retailer in terms of growth and good ethical business practices, and those who have excelled in store design and visual merchandising, respectively.
Making the Philippines as the “New Shopping Capital of Asia”
In 1996, the PRA, in cooperation with the Department of Tourism (DOT) launched the Philippine Shopping Festival—a monumental 5-year project to put the Philippines in the shopping map of the world and turn the Philippines into the New Shopping Capital of Asia.
Starting in the year 2002, the PRA and the DOT have also spearheaded the Grand Fiesta Sale, which is a 2-week concerted activity among the retailers. This will be held in January of each year.
In support of the tourism promotional efforts of the DOT, the PRA also encourages its members to support and participate other similar endeavors such as the Visit Island Philippines (VIP) program, Balikbayan Cards, and the Tourism Volunteer 12 program, among others.
Professionalization of the Retail Industry
The PRA is committed to the professionalization of the retail industry. This effort is evident in its various tie-ups and joint undertakings with the academe in the conduct of retail management courses, among them with the De La Salle University-College of St. Benilde, the University of Asia and the Pacific, and the Asian Institute of Management. It is also working with the Pamantasan ng Makati, and the Lyceum of the Philippines in the conduct of baccalaureate courses in retail management.

Finally, there is the unquantifiable benefit of enjoying the prestige of being part of a strong and militant group, which can support you and stand behind you should you ever find yourself needing help.
There are also unlimited opportunities for its members to provide community service where it is needed most through the PRA’s civic projects.
